HAIRDRESSERS’ AWARD

CONfiITIONS IN WELLINGTON INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT

(United Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 14.

An award covering the working conditions of hairdressing saloons in the Wellington industrial, district was issued by Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M., acting as a duly appointed delegate by the Arbitration Court.

The award mainly follows the recommendations arrived at in the Conciliation Council, but one of the matters- argued before the Magistrate was

the closing hours on Saturdays. These remain unaltered, Mr Gilmour upholding an objection to the proposal that all saloons should close. He held that the Court had no jurisdiction to fix such closing hours as would restrict the statutory right of the occupier to elect which working day in the week he would observe as a statutory closing day. . , i The closing hours were fixed at 6p.m. for four days, 9 p.m. for one day, and for noon on the day observed as a statutory half-holiday. The week is to be 44 hours. The minimum journeyman’s wage is £5 8/6 a week, within 25 miles of the Chief Post Office, and £5 5/- outside that.
