BOBBY CALF POOLS SUCCESSFUL

EXTENSION OF REGULATIONS The Minister of Marketing (the Hon. W. Nash) has announced that revised regulations have been issued governing the general operations of protected bobby calf pools now established throughout the Dominion. “These new regulations,” stated the Minister, “are an extension of the original bobby calf marketing regulations introduced early in 1938 which have now been revised in the light of experience gained in marketing calves under the pool system during the past 12 months.

“They now provide the necessary

machinery by which each pool can continue its operations from year to year on a self-governing basis. GOOD SAVINGS “A total of 58 protected pools were formed during the last year, and through the agency, of the producercommittees, more than 350,000 calves were successfully marketed with substantial savings to the producer and a material improvement in handling. “The following summarized results of the protected pools will be of interest to the farming community:— Non pool Pool area area Condemned calves 5 1.98 Cart, costs a calf 1/5J 11.9 d Average payment a calf 6/9 7/2 “This means that not only have producers in the pool areas received an increased payment for their calves, but in addition the wasteful overlapping in cartage with consequent wear and tear on country roads has been eliminated and calves have received far more humane treatment in every way. “At present the pool principle is undoubtedly one of the main factors in safeguarding our valuable export trade of boneless veal to the United Kingdom, and I am hopeful that many more pools will be formed during the coming season.”
