COMBINING THE OLD WITH THE NEW

The blending of the old with the new, which has become the outstanding feature of modem dress design, is a scheme that is finding favour in other directions as well—notably in the furnishing and decoration of the home. No longer are there such marked delineations between period and so-called modern styles; we are learning to be more selective, choosing the best from each and harmoniously combining them in such a way as to achieve the grace and dignity of the old world with the comfort and practicability of the new.

A revived interest in handwork embroideries, tapestry and the like has given impetus to this, and the present fashion for hand-made cushion covers, chair seats, stool tops, fire screens and rugs has done much to introduce distinction and charm into the modern home'. One" must, of course, use discretion in choosing tapestries and large pieces of embroidery; traditional Spanish galleons, Tudor roses and intricate Florentine motifs accord ill with a furnishing scheme that features low divans and streamlined tables of natural wood.
