PUNISHMENT BY DEATH

LABOUR PARTY URGES ABOLITION

OPPOSITION TO USE OF STRAP IN SCHOOLS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 13. On the recommendation of the general committee, the conference of the New Zealand Labour Party reaffirmed the principle of the abolition of corporal and capital punishment, including corporal punishment in schools. The following remit was adopted:— “That the present legislation in respect to prosecutions by police officers be amended to: (a) Allow defendants who are acquitted to be released from the total cost of defending the action; (b) that Crown defendants be appointed to act in all cases where the Crown Prosecutor is engaged.” The Government was congratulated upon the progress made in housing the people and it was decided to suggest that meanwhile consideration be given to the advisability of extending the scope and purpose of the. Fair Rents Act. The committee stated that it had been informed that the Government was strengthening its organization for building more houses each year and that the question of rents generally was at present under review by the Government.

It was decided to send a cable message congratulating the British Labour Party on the stand taken against aggressor nations.
