RUGBY FOOTBALL

CENTRAL DISTRICT SUB-UNION THREE ENTRIES FOR SENIOR COMPETITION Only three entries have been received for the senior Rugby football competition in the Central district. At a meeting of the Central Sub-Union, Mr R. *.l. Martin (Dipton) said that it was impossible for Dipton to field either a senior or a junior team this season. The club had lost 10 of last years senior players and there were only about six footballers in the district. Two meetings had already been held by the club, bur at each only eight Pisons, nearly all former players, had been present If entries were left open for another week it would still make no difference, he said. Wrights Bush delegates stated that it was impossible for their team to go up to first grade. The entries received were: Drummond, Central Star and WintonMr Martin suggested that if /Winton could enter two senior teams, about four players from Dipton and about the same number from Limehills, who had been included in the Dipton team last season, would join Winton. He suggested that an occasional game be played at Diptor. and the gate receipts would go towards the travelling expenses of the Winton team. If Winton agreed to the proposal he felt sure that the Dipton Club would pay the affiliation fee of one team. . The president (Mr J. Reid) said that it would be rather difficult to run the senior competition with three teams, as one team would be idle each Saturday. He hoped that the Winton club would favour the proposal. In moving that entries be left open for another week, Mr J. A. Clark, president of the Winton Club, said that he would place the proposal before his club. c , Delegates were present from the following clubs: Winton, Limehills, Dipton, Central Star, Wrights Bush, Drummond, Turi and Otahuti.

NEW JUNIOR TEAM An application from the new Otahuti Club for permission to enter a junior team in the competition was granted and an application for the club’s colours to be royal blue was refused because of the similarity to Central Star colours. Six junior teams were entered as follows’ —Winton, Limehills, Wrights Bush, Turi, Central Star and Otahuti. Opening day for both competitions was fixed for Saturday April 29. The following referees stated their willingness to act during the season: Messrs R. M. Martin, A. Slaughter, A. Murphy, W. Sands, R. Reid, S. McDonald,. A. Fleming, W. Moylan, W. Bews, J. Murphy and W. Boyle. It was decided to supply all referees with badges marked C.D.R.. Mr R. Reid said that many of the football grounds did not have fences along the sidelines. It was only fair to the referees that there should be some means of keeping spectators off the playing area. The president said that the sub-union could not compel the clubs to put up fences, but it was up to the various clubs to do something in the matter. It was decided that the winners of the senior and junior competitions be also presented with banners to be retained by them. The secretary was instructed to arrange a date in June with the Western Sub-Union for a match for the Baird Cup to be played at Otautau. It was mentioned that Central had the first challenge for the Sports Trust Cup, which would be played against Eastern. The following transfers were granted: J. Forde from Central Star to Otahuti; R. Mcllwrick, from Central Star to Winton. Forde was also granted a regrade. It was mentioned that all Central Star home matches would be played at Browns. SCHOOL FOOTBALL Mr Martin said that the falling off of football in the Central district was

probably the result of t h “ e "°^ er al enough football in the schools. Several schemes had been attempted to encour age school football in the P ast ’ b had not been successful. A new . sc £ el ” f had been arranged at a . teachers from Central District schools. It was decided that all schools . be brought into Winton on two or three Saturdays and that teams would oe made up so that every boy would be given a game. The matches would be gin in the morning and a final p V in the afternoon as a curtain-rais a competition game. Later on intended that a Central representative team would be selected to comp against other districts. ~ Mr Martin said that transport would entail a certain amount ot expense and he wondered if the would be willing to assist to the extern ° f lt b was “decided that the pay all expenses for school football during the season.
