Club Games Begin Oil Saturday DRAW FOR OPENING ROUNDS The draw for the first round of senior Rugby matches (Galbraith Shield competition) was made at a meeting of the management committee of the Southland Rugby Union last evening as follows: — Marist v. Star, at Rugby Park at 1.45 Pirates v. Old Boys, at Rugby Park at 2.30 p.m. Invercargill v. Bluff, at Rugby Park at 3.15 p.m. In the second round of games to be played on Saturday, April 22, the following draw was made:—

Star v. Old Boys. Marist v. Invercargill. Pirates v. Bluff. Matches in the junior grades will begin on April 22. The following transfers were granted: E. P. O’Callaghan, Dipton to Marist; J. Orlowski, Athletic (Oamaru) to Marist; N Ward, Orawia to Marist; L. Rodgers, Waikiwi to Pirates; H. McCulloch, Waikiwi to Pirates; R. McCulloch, Waikiwi to Pirates; W. R. Potts, Waikiwi to Pirates; J. W. Fleming, Eastbourne (Wellington) to Invercargill. It was decided to nominate Mr A. J. Geddes as a South Island selector and to nominate Mr L. R. Lopdell as a member of the New Zealand Rugby Council. It was also decided to support the nomination of Dr W. S. Seed, of Christchurch as a vice-president of the New Zealand Rugby Union. MR GIBBONS NOMINATED AS SELECTOR (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 12. The Otago Rugby Union decided tonight to nominate Mr C. G. Gibbons as a member of the South Island selection committee.

SOUTHLAND EASTER PAIRS WIN FOR INVERCARGILL CLUB The final game in the Southland Easter pairs bowls tournament was played between R. Holmes and H. L. Hay (Invercargill) and J. Fraser and J. Manson (Southland) on the Southland green yesterday afternoon. The Invercargill pair won by 21 points to When this game was stopped because of rain on Monday afternoon the scores after five ends had been played were: Southland 6, Invercargill 2. The Invercargill pair quickly found the green yesterday and scored a two and a single. Southland scored a single on the eighth end and led by two points. Then a change came over the game which proved to be the turning point in the game. Invercargill scored four, three and two on successive ends, and at the eleventh the scores were: Invercargill 17, Southland 7.

Good drawing by Fraser and Manson gave Southland a three on the twelfth, but Holmes and Hay kept their lead of seven by scoring a two and a single on the next two ends. Southland scored another three on the fifteenth, but over the last few ends lost some good chances to draw level with Invercargill. Twice with the shot in his favour Manson disturbed the head and lost points. At the twentv-first end Invercargill had a lead of six points. ■ Southland scored one on the last and won an interesting game by 21 to 16. EASTER TOURNAMENT AT ROXBURGH FOUR EVENTS DECIDED The annual tournament of the Roxburgh Bowling Club was held during the Easter holidays in ideal weather and on a first-class green. Many clubs were represented including Gore, Kaitangata, Riverton, Tapanui, Dunedin, Port Chalmers and Millers Flat. The visitors expressed themselves as being very well satisfied with the pleasant and enjoyable time they had spent. The number of entries was a record and the tournament proved very successful financially The following were the results: — MIXED PAIRS Semi-finals.—J. Hammond and Mrs Hammond 8 beat N. Campbell and Mrs Faigan 5; A. Holmes and Mrs Rooney 12 beat T. Dunlay and Mrs McKnight 7. Final.—A. Holmes and Mrs Rooney (Roxburgh) 23 beat Hammond and Mrs Hammond (Roxburgh) 21. PAIRS Semi-Finals—Wallis and Campbell beat Taylo’- and McTaggart; Hunter and Hogg beat Henry and Cuttriss. Final.—Wallis and Campbell (Gore) beat Hunter and Hogg (Riverton). RINKS Semi-Finals.—McTaggart 10 beat Smith 7; Tait 12 beat Betting 7. Final.—McTaggart 21 beat Tait 19. The winning rink was: T. Dunlay, Purvis, McTaggart and Sachtle. SINGLES Semi-finals—Mackie 9 beat Martin 2; Botting 13 beat Carr 7. Final.—A. J. Botting (Stirling) 19 beat Mackie (Kaitangata) 14.

QUEEN’S PARK LADIES’ CLUB Members of the Queen’s Park Ladies’ Golf Club took part in a bogeyhandicap in fine weather yesterday. The winners in the various grades were:—

Senior, Miss I. Russell, 3 down; junior, Miss S. Falconer, 1 up; C grade. Miss G. Aschman. Reduction: Miss Falconer 34 to 31. Mrs G. Gifford joined the ranks of B grade and reduced 3. The following handicap reductions were made: Miss Falconer, 34 to 31; Mrs Gifford, 36 to 33.

BASKETBALL

HANDICAPS FOR SATURDAY The opening games of the 1939 basketball season will be played at the Duke street courts on Saturday, when town teams will compete in a two-life tournament. The following are the handicaps:— Senior section.—Collegiate I scr, Rata scr, St. Mary’s scr, Collegiate II 6, Exhibition 5, Makarewa 4, Rosedale 4, Rata II 4, Pirates 4, S.G.H.S. 7, Stuarts 4, St. Mary’s II 7, Technical 4. Junior sections.—Makarewa HI scr.

Rosedale scr, Bluff scr, Stuarts scr, Technical scr, McKenzie’s scr, H. and J.’s scr, Collegiate IV 5, Bluff IV 6, St. Mary’s IV 5, Technical IVA 6, Technical IVB 6, Clifton 8. All games will be played in two spells . ' 12 minutes each way.
