SHIPLOAD WITHOUT A COUNTRY
STEAMER TURNED BACK FROM PALESTINE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received April 12, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 12. One thousand Jewish refugees are afloat in the Mediterranean without a country after being refused admission to Palestine. The Greek steamer Assami, while attempting to smuggle in 200 Jews was seized. This ■was the third shipload to be turned back during the Passover festival. The Jerusalem correspondent of The Times says that approximately 1000 Jews, exclusive of wives and minors, were admitted to Palestine in April. The rate has been substantially unaltered. The maximums allowed are 110 capitalists, 220 students, 110 labourers, 440 dependents and 30 following a religious calling.
It is expected that more than 10,000 Jewish refugees wifi have arrived at Shanghai from Germany by the end of May. At present 6700 are tn Shanghai. Six hundred will arrive on April 25, and 3000 are expected during May. It is reported that the bookings made involve arrival at the rate of 1000 a month from June to September.
