MATAURA

BASKETBALL, CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING SUCCESSFUL SEASON REVIEWED There was only a small attendance at the annual meeting of the Mataura Basketball Club. Miss A. Winning presided. The annual report stated that the club started the season with a debit balance of £6 13/11 and finished with a credit of balance of £2O 11/7, which was considered very satisfactory. The revenue was derived principally from the proceeds of a concert which was successfully staged during the year. Although not successful in winning either of the competitions, many inter-, esting games were played. The club extends congratulations to J. R. McKenzie’s team which won the A grade trophy and also to Pukerau, the winner of the B grade. The club had more members last year and had no difficulty in fielding teams of full strength. The club was unfortunate in losing the services of Misses I. Clearwater and S. Calder, also the president and coach, Mr A. Grant, during the year. The club wishes to congratulate Misses E. Grant, P. Calder, D. Jardine, M. McKenzie and I. Knowles, all of whom gained representative honours.

At the end of the season a friendly match was played against a Dunedin team. This match produced- a high standard of play and was won by the visitors.

The election of officers resulted:— President, Miss A. Winning; vice-presi-dents, Mrs N. T. Hamilton, Miss M. C. Dickie and Mr J. Calder; executive, Mrs H. Anderson, Misses J. Prain, I. Knowles, M. McCartney, Mr J. Calder and officers; delegates to Eastern Southland District Union, club captain and secretary. It was decided to raise the subscriptions from 2/6 to 3/6 and to pay half the cost of travelling for all team games. It was also decided to give a new ball to the school team. The secretary was instructed to apply for a book of the new rules.

Several new members were proposed. The appointment of referees was held over until the first committee meeting.
