VALLEY DESOLATED BY FIRE

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED NEAR MOTUEKA (United Press Association) MOTUEKA, March 29. Fanned by a high wind, a fire on Tuesday night swept through Canaan Valley, in the Takaka hills near Motueka, destroying in its path the homestead of Mr E. Sixtus and sheds, a stable, hay stacks and whares on the property of Mr J. Sixtus, and causing heavy loss of stock and feed. When the flames had passed, after a night of terror for the residents of the valley, all that remained was the homestead of Mr J. Sixtus, which was saved by hours of strenuous fighting by the owner. Of the 1000 sheep in the valley, only 50 were mustered yesterday. To save his home, Mr Sixtus carried buckets of water single handed from a creek.
