Japanese Trade Harmed
Many methods of damaging the trade of Japanese merchants in the East Indies are being adopted by Chinese residents, according to passengers who arrived at Auckland from Singapore by the Maetsuycker on Thursday. In numerous centres, Japanese stores were being boycotted, it was stated, and Chinese not observing the boycott were occasionally dealt with in a rough manner. A recent offender in this respect had his ears cut off by several of his countrymen. In Singapore and elsewhere some rickshaw coolies refused to take passengers to Japanese addresses.
