DOG TRIALS AT GREENVALE

EIGHTH ANNUAL FIXTURE GOOD ENTRIES RECEIVED Good entries were received for the Greenvale Collie Dog Club’s annual sheep-dog trials held on Mr M. Kirkpatrick’s property on Tuesday and yesterday. Excellent weather prevailed both days and the trials were an outstanding success, the standard of the work being very good. On the first day two events, the maiden head and the open head, were completed and the remaining events were finished in good time yesterday. The most successful competitors were Messrs W. Hickey, J. B. Queale (Lochiel) and L. A. Charleson (Waikaka). Mr Queale’s dogs gave splendid performances in the open heading event and he secured three placings, his dogs being placed first, second and fourth in this event. In the maiden heading event, Mr Charleson’s Sandy gave the best display and won the event by two points from Mr P. Turnbull’s Ted.

In the first event yesterday, the maiden huntaway and slew, Mr W. Hickey’s Mack was the only dog to gain points out of the eight dogs competing. The same dog gave another good display in the open event and it won this event also from Mr E. Stiven’s Ding by one point. Mr L. Charleson’s Ronald was two points behind third. The last event of the day, the handy dog sweepstake, was won by Mr J. Waddell’s Glen by one point from Mr Charleson’s Ronald. Competition was keen in most events and there was very little between the placed dogs. Mr R. McKenzie was president and assisted by an enthusiastic band of officials he conducted the trials in an efficient manner. Several competitions were held on both days. Sandy was cast to the right and headed in 50sec. He brought the sheep to the ring in 2min 50sec and completed the run in 3min 50sec.

Ted went out on the right, going wide, and headed in Imin 2sec. He pulled a bit hard and came to the ring in 2min 35sec and completed in 3min 45sec.

Moss cast to the right, came in on the cast and was re-directed. He headed and pulled in a good line but a bit hard near the ring. He let the sheep out of the ring once and completed in 7min 20sec.

Jack was cast to the right, headed in Imin. lOsec, pulled to the ring in 3min llsec. He let the sheep out once and completed in 4min llsec. OPEN HEAD, about 400 yards.— Head, pull, hold in ring, drive and yard. Time, 10 minutes. First £4 10/and cup valued at £5 5/-, donated by the late Mr W. Bess went out on the right, overran the sheep and headed in Imin 9sec. The dog pulled well and yarded in 7min 53sec.

Trim, who was sent out on the left, stopped before heading but went on to head in Imin 20sec. The dog let the sheep drift to the right in pulling to ring. He yarded in 7min 25sec. Bradman went out on the right and made a running head in 60sec. He pulled to the ring in 2min 17sec and yarded in 6min 15sec. Roy on a right-hand cast headed in lmin ssec and pulled to the ring in 2min 52sec. He let the sheep out of the ring once and completed in Bmin.

MAIDEN HUNTAWAY AND SLEW. (Between three sets of poles.) First, £3 10/_ and silver rose bowl donated by James Buchanan and Co., Ltd. (value £5 5/-), second £2,. ; third £1 and fourth 10/-. Points: Hunt 25, command 10, noise 15, slew 10. Total, 60.

W. Hickey’s Mack 18pts 1 Mack was the only dog to make a showing and gain points. Also competed: W. Hickey’s Spong G. Potter’s Cast and Sid, J. O’Brien’s Scamp, Miss A. McKenzie’s Kep, J. Mack took the sheep through the first poles in llsec, and on through the second set in 40sec and the third poles in lmin 40sec. The dog took 2min Bsec to complete the course, maintaining a good line throughout. Ding let the sheep to the right after passing through the first poles in lmin 45sec, but recovered and took the sheep through the second set in 2min 47sec and third in 3min 49sec, completing in 4min 39sec.

Ronald’s times through the first and second poles were lmin 35sec and 2min 15sec respectively, but the dog split the sheep before going through the third set and also allowed them to go slightly below the level of the fourth poles before completing the course in 7min 45sec.

Moss split the sheep before getting them through the first poles in 2min 9sec. Thereafter the sheep got out of line to the right but the dog recovered and took them through the second poles in 4min 20sec, through the third in 6min 26sec and the fourth set in 7min 20sec.
