Mrs W. H. Jones, Ohai, was a visitor to town for the Russian Ballet performance.

Mrs Angus Macdonald, who has been staying at The Rocks, Riverton, has returned to her home, Plains Station. Mr and Mrs Robert Armstrong and Master James Armstrong, Elies road, were passengers by the Maunganui for Melbourne and Sydney. Mr and Mrs H. J. Macalister and their two daughters sailed from Sydney yesterday in the Nieu Zeeland for Java, en route to England. Mrs G. E. Warnock, Kingston, and her guest, Miss Vanda Duntan, Dunedin, were visitors to town for the Russian Ballet performance. Mr and Mrs Noel McGregor leave today for Dunedin, where they will attend the twenty-first anniversary celebrations of John McGlashan College. The Mayoress, Mrs J. R. Hanan, entertained the members of the City Council, and their wives, at a supper party last evening at Mrs A. Hanan’s home in Leet street.

Miss Iris Wilson, of the Presbyterian Youth Staff, is at present in Invercargill in connection with the Youth Institute being held this week in First Church and is the guest of Miss Scott, Mary street. Mrs A. F. Ritchie Crawford, Don street, who has been on a sin months’ visit to her sister, Mrs Hugh Webb, Assam, will return to Invercargill this evening. Mrs Webb accompanied Mrs

Crawford to New Zealand, but will remain in the North Island for some weeks before visiting Invercargill. An innovation for St. John’s Girls’ School in the form of swimming sports took place at the tepid baths yesterday afternoon. Among those present were Mesdames A. Macalister, A. L. Broughton, R. Royds, R. Lund, E. E. Broad, S. Williams, C. B. Broad, D. Palmer, Speirs, R. Alington, Holloway and Fowler; Misses M. Rowley, P. Hodge, M. Macalister, A. Oliver and J. Carswell.

Recent guests at Woodslea House, Stewart Island, included Mrs H. Minhinnick (Auckland), Miss F. Donald (Featherstone), Miss D, McLeod (Wairarapa), Mr and Mrs J. D. Trotter and Miss Trotter (Woodlands), Mr and Mrs E. C. Isaacs, Miss A. M. McLean (Dunedin), Miss N. Wilkie (Christchurch), Miss D. Marshall (Alexandra), Miss M. A. Cameron, Messrs A. R. Arlow and P. H. Jenkinson (Wellington), E. R. Fairburn (Whangarei), V. Price, N. Melvin, C. C. Kenward and H. Gregory (Invercargill).

COUNTRY NEWS

WINTON Mrs W. C. Cleine and her children, of Invercargill, were the week-end guests of Mrs C. Baird, Mary street. Mr and Mrs V. J. Lea, Albert street, are on holiday at Lyttelton. Mrs Bell, of Invercargill, stayed a few days with Mrs J. Nimmo, New road, last week. , Mr and Mrs Hamilton, of Mataura, spent the week-end with Mrs J. McKenzie, Arthur street. Mr and Mrs P. Boylen and Misses E. and T. Boylen, Great North road, were visitors to Kelso for the weekend.

Miss J. Thomson, of Invercargill, has returned home after spending a few days with her sister, Mrs W. Swale, Limehills.

Mr and Mrs H. Cochrane, New road, are staying in Christchurch. Miss I. Jenkins, of Invercargill, spent the week-end with Miss T. Valli, East Winton.

Miss Nancy McLean, of Oreti, stayed a few days in Dunedin last week. Mr and Mrs S. G. Jackson, of Christchurch, have been the guests of Miss Marion Tilley, Great North road. Miss C. Doherty, of Invercargill, spent a few days with Mrs J. Doherty, Grange street, last week. Misses I. Barker and J. Affleck, of Oreti, are on holiday at Stewart Island. Miss J. Thomson, of Lochiel, stayed a few days at Makarewa recently. Miss D. Cowan, of Drummond, is

staying at West Plains as the guest of Miss R. Lilico.

Mrs Kirkland and family, of Invercargill, have been the guests of Mrs J. Brown, Albert street. Mrs A. P. Suddaby, Alton Valley, spent a few days at her home recently. Miss J. Shaw, Invercargill, was a week-end visitor to her home. Mrs T. Palmer, Otautau, is staying with her mother, Mrs F. Ferguson. Miss M. Hynd, who has been on holiday at Alton Valley, spent a few days with Mrs M. Moylan, before returning to her home in Invercargill. Miss O. Thomson paid a brief visit to Tahakopa recently. Miss A. Fell was a recent visitor to her home in Invercargill. Miss K. Harvey, Winton, is the guest of her sister, Mrs C. Hooker. Miss M. Hennessey, Invercargill, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Hennessey. Mr and Mrs T. Hinkley, late of Gap Road, have gone to live at Waihoaka. Mr and Mrs J. Cook have gone to live at Orepuki. Mrs W. Hannan is staying with her daughter, Mrs J. Mangan, Tuatapere. Mr and Mrs S. M. Smart and family, Gore, were the week-end guests of Mr and Mrs E. Maginness. Miss Wright, Invercargill, is visiting friends in the district.

Mrs Young, Tuatapere, was the recent guest of her daughter, Mrs H. J. Townshend. Miss P. Murdoch has returned to Fairfax, after being the guest of Mrs W. E. Barnett.
