BRANCH OF UNION FORMED

BRICKLAYERS’ DECISION A decision to form a branch of the Bricklayers’ Union in Invercargill was reached at a meeting of bricklayers last night. A letter was read from the secretary of the Otago Union (Mr R. C. Ross), stating that it was the wish of the Otago Union that a branch be established in Southland. The letter stated that the branch would have complete autonomy and suggested that a strong branch bo formed. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. Hale; vice-president, Mr J. Coatsworth: secretary and treasurer, Mr W. S. Whitty; executive committee, Messrs R. C. Ramsay, F. James and E. Allan. The secretary was instructed to write to the inspector of factories and ask that action be taken against workers who were not members of the union. The meeting decided that meetings of the union be held quarterly and that executive meetings be held monthly.
