RESULT OF GERMAN PROTEST ALL DEFENCE LEAVE CANCELLED THREAT IN NAZI NOTE TO GOVERNMENT (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Independent Cable Service) (Received March 20, 11.40 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, March 20. The South African Government’s precautions as a result of the German protest against the restriction on immigration included cancelling all leave in the defence forces, warning all defence reservists to be available within 24 hours and concentrating a South African squadron at Simonstown, the naval base near Cape Town. ■ It is revealed that the German Note stated that if permission for migrants to land were withheld, the Germans would not be responsible for the consequences. A guard is mounted at the Pretoria steel works, which employs a number of Germans.
