WINTER WORK AT HOMER TUNNEL
Minister To Explore Possibility PROTECTION WORK AT MOUTH (Special to The Times) DUNEDIN, March 20. The possibility of continuing work on the driving of . the Homer tunnel heading during the winter will be investigated by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) when he visits the Homer saddle on Wednesday. The Minister, who arrived in Dunedin this afternoon from Christchurch, said in an interview tonight that if it were found possible to keep the work going during the winter with safety, progress could be expedited to a great extent. A considerable amount of avalanche protection work has been carried out at the tunnel mouth during the past year and the extent to which this has been done will probably influence the Minister in making his decision after he inspects the work. The driving of the bottom heading, which is actually the smaller tunnel, has now proceeded beyond half-way and when, this has been finished it will permit of much greater speed in the excavation of the tunnel itself.
