POLO SAVILLE CUP TOURNAMENT The opening games of the New Zealand Polo Association’s Saville Cup tournament were played at Feilding this afternoon, Cambridge meeting Rangitikei and Hawke’s Bay playing Matangi. Rangitikei upset all expectations in the first game, beating Cambridge, holder of the Saville Cup by five goals to four after a closely-contested game. The first chukka ended with the scores two to one in favour of Rangitikei and in the second chukka Rangitikei, with brilliant hitting, added two more. The Cambridge men were not on form at this stage, their positional play being bad. Nolan was outstanding for the Cambridge side, from the third chukka on leading attack after attack, which invariably broke down through insufficient support. The fourth chukka saw the score 5-2 in favour of Rangitikei. From then on Cambridge was not going better. K. Peake reverted to flashes of his usual form, sending in a beautiful goal. In the fifth chukka there was no score, after good play which was repeated in the final chukka, Cambridge scoring another goal, making the scores 5-4. The meeting between Matangi and Hawke’s Bay provided a keen game, the Waikato team getting an early lead, which Hawke’s Bay gradually wore down, winning by eight goals to four. The veteran, F. McKenzie, gave a great exhibition of positional play. Lyons was also good in the Hawke’s Bay side. G. Peake and H. Peake were the best players in the Matangi team.
