REBEL PURGE IN SPAIN
Public Officials In “Liberated” Areas TEST OF POLITICAL SYMPATHIES REPUBLICAN EFFORTS TO ARRANGE PEACE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received March 15, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, March 15. Elaborate details of a purge of public officials in the “liberated regions” in Spain are published by General Franco’s Ministry of the Interior, says the Burgos correspondent of The Times. All concerned in urban, rural and other administrations must, within eight days of the occupation of Republican territories, answer questionnaires stating
in detail the attitude they adopted towards the Republican regime and their affiliations to political parties and freemasonry. They must also produce witnesses and documents as proof. Penalties can be imposed for sins of omission and commission which indicate an “anti-patriotic attitude” or “passivity among those who could have co-operat-ed with the nationalist movement but did not,” and other vague offences. Meanwhile it is announced from Madrid that the Republican Minister of Defence (Colonel Sigismundo Casado) is trying to begin negotiations for peace on a basis of an independent Spain and no reprisals.
Twelve persons were killed, including three women and four children, and many others were injured in two air raids on Valencia.
