EL CABALLO’S PROGRESS

Lumsden Club’s Sound Position SPANISH LAD HAS TRAINED ON Nominations for the Otautau meeting close tomorrow at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the Birchwood Hunt meeting close on Friday. Riverton handicaps appear on Wednesday, March 22. Handicaps for the Great Easter snd the Great Autumn are due next Monday. Named The yearling filly by Garnish from Mapuni in F. W. Ellis’s stable will race under the name of Garoui. Has Improved Pandine has done well since joining J. Thistleton’s Riverton stable and he gave a first-class display over live schooling fences on Saturday morning. He is carrying more condition than he has for some time. Gold Wren’s Troubles Gold Wren is at present troubled with a splint, but it is not regarded as serious and he is being treated tor it He was schooled for the first tune this season at Riverton on Saturday morning when he jumped five of the schooling fences. Hunting Chorus Hunting Chorus, who has yet to be produced this season, is a regular worker at Riverton and has been snaping satisfactorily. His only success to date was -t Wingatui last June on a heavy track, but he has only to train on to win on firm going. Lumsden Hack Club The annual meeting of the Lumsden Hack Racing Club was held in the Town Board office when thqre was an attendance of 30 members. Mr *’• Hazlett was chairman. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £lO7, the membership totalling 193. It was decided not to hold a race meeting this season to allow necessary improvements to be carried out on the course. The annual meeting was adjourned until May, when the officials will be appointed. Recovered

Nightwings has shaken off the effects of the bruised heels which hampered her during the Dunedin Cup meeting, and she will probably be a starter in the Great Autumn. Looks Well

Janet Gaynor is reported to be looking better now than at any previous stage of her career. This speedy but erratic mare has not been in the money in 11 starts this season. A Fit Colt

Beaulivre has not raced since the Wellington Cup meeting where he won a double, and his next start will be in the North Island Challenge Stakes on the second day of the approaching autumn meeting. That he is a fit colt he proved at Trentham last week when he was always clear of Globe Trotter in a five-furlong gallop, covering the last half-mile in 48sec. El Caballo’s Progress

No jumper at Invercargill has improved more than El Caballo, and the Balboa gelding will strip in forward order for the Birchwood Hunt meeting next week. He has done everything expected of him in his schooling tasks and this season promises to add interest to the important jumping events. In his racing last ; car he did not stay on as well as expected, but the experience he has had will assist him in this direction. To Reappear

Irish Fling, a novice who attracted attention earlier in the year, is again working in good style at Riverton ana will have her next race at the Birchwood meeting. The half-sister to Wild Career had to be put aside for a time because of soreness, but she has now thrown off all signs of this. She is regarded as a novice much above the average. Trained On Spanish Lad has trained on the right way since he won at Gore and the Balboa gelding has impressed track watchers by his work at Riverton. On Saturday morning he always had tne measure of Rodeur over six furlongs in lmin 19 3-ssec. This pair are probably the two best sprinters in the south at the present, but at the weights Spanish Lad has a definite pull over Rodeur, who, however, is being tried over middle distances. R. McNay has not a big team in work at the present time, but with this pair he is likely to be very much in evidence at coming meetings.

Great Autumn Entrants Both Galleon and Foxlove have been nominated for the Great Autumn Handicap, and if they carry out this programme F. W. Ellis will have Mona’s Song to represent him in the Riverton Cup. Although he has failed so far in his races this season, Galleon has rarely looked better, and the Paladin gelding may not be long in returning to the winning list. In his races at Gore he did not appear to be ridden to the best advantage as he was always kept too far back and when he was moved on half a mile from home he was conceding the leaders each day an almost impossible start. Foxlove appears to have recovered completely from the muscle injuries he received at the Dunedin Cup meeting. He put on some condition when eased in his work but he will not require much work to bring him back to his best as he comes to hand quickly. A stayer of his worth would have to be considered in a race such as the Great Autumn. Salisbury Stud Yearlings

Mr L. C. Hazlett has decided to send eight yearlings, all by the Solferino horse Gustavo, and two three-year-olds by Paper Money to Trentham for the sale to be held there next Saturday. The dams of the yearlings are Water Power (Tractor— Charybdis), Callbird (Pallas—Decoy), the dam of High Gear and On Call; Pink Terrace (Tractor —All Pink), winner of the C.J.C. Oaks Stakes, 1926, and dam of Half Note; Saxophone (Nigger Min-strel-Compression, the dam of Mary Pratt); Traction (Tractor—Droski, the dam of Ravenna, Bonnie Lake, Overdrawn, and other winners); Ravenna (Solferino —Droski, the dam of Amy Johnson, Ventrac, Travenna, and Alma); Tractora (Tractor from Western Song’s dam) ; and Firette (Firearm, a son of Carbine—Achilla.). The dams of the three-year-old fillies are Firette and Airvalve (Tractor—Callbird), a full sister to High Gear. Seven of the yearlings are fillies, and all are particularly well grown. Breeders who value the Solferino blood will have

a rare chance of securing it in this draft. Gustavo is the only sire by Solferino in the Dominion, and the few of his progeny that have raced have shown both speed and stamina. The three-year-olds have been handled and are ready to go into work straight away.
