DEVELOPMENT OF ART AND CULTURE
UNIVERSITY ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHLAND The annual meeting of the University Association of Southland was held in the Rosewood tea-rooms last night. Mr B. W. Hewat presided over a good attendance of members. When the association was formed it had as its principal objective the development of art and culture, and it could be said that with the formation of off-shoot societies dealing with the different branches of art and culture the association had gone a considerable distance towards attaining that objective, said the chairman when moving the adoption of the annual report. The membership last year was 139 and the financial position was satisfactory. Mr H. W. Slater, who seconded the motion, praised the work of Mr Charles Martin in the development of the music section of the association. The report was adopted.
The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr F. M. Corkill; vice-presidents, Messrs Charles Martin and R. J. Gilmour; secretary, Mr G. Hill; treasurer. Mr J. G. Imlay; council, Misses Eastwood, Enderby and Durward, Dr G. H. Uttley, Dr J. A. Pottinger, Dr A. T. McCaw and Messrs C. A. Stewart, J. L. Cameron, H. W. Slater, T. H. Jenkin and J. H. Sorenson and the Rev. C. J. Tocker; auditor, Mr A. W. Jones. After the annual meeting Dr J. G. Macdonald gave an interesting talk on his recent travels in the British Isles and parts of Europe. With the aid of road maps Dr Macdonald traversed the many places visited by him and told of the scenic and architectural, beauties seen. He was accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
