HOMER TUNNEL VISIT

MINISTER’S INSPECTION To determine whether is is practicable to carry out work on the Homer tunnel during the winter months, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple), accompanied by the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr J. Wood), will pay a visit of inspection on March. 21. “Winter work would involve a tremendous amount of pumping,” explained Mr Semple when he arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. “Mr Wood and I want to convince ourselves that the job can be continued with safety. We are trying to make it is safe as possible, trying to protect the men against avalanches.” Mr Semple will leave for the Home! - tunnel on Monday, March 20. After his visit to the tunnel the Minuter will officially open the new Rakaia bridge on March 25.
