GORE RAM FAIR

BIG INCREASE IN ENTRIES SHEEP EXHIBITED IN GOOD CONDITION A big increase in entries was an outstanding feature of the annual stud ram fair and sale of flock rams other than Romney Marsh conducted by the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association in the show grounds yesterday. Last year the entries at the fair totalled 294 and yesterday they were 698. However, yesterday’s entries were swelled by the inclusion of cast-for-age stud Romney Marsh ewes and stud Southdown ewes, there being no representatives of these classes at the 1938 fixture. The fair began about 10 a.m. and finished shortly before 4.30 p.m. Generally speaking, the animals exhibited were in good condition and realized fairly high prices, although the demand was not as brisk as usual. There was a representative attendance of buyers, but the number was not as big as in some past years and this may be attributed to some extent to the fact that many of the farmers would be engaged in harvesting operations. There was quite a keen demand for stud Romney Marsh rams and in this section the top price of the sale was secured. This was 50 guineas for a splendid representative of the breed exhibited by David Robertson, of Waikoikoi. The purchaser was Mr J. Byars, of Waikaka Valley, and Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., were the agents. The prices realized for this breed were about on a par with last year and showed a slight improvement, if anything. At the 1938 fair the top price was 41 guineas, secured by Mr A. S. Elworthy, of Timaru. There was only a small entry in the stud Southdown section and the demand was not particularly good. A one-shear ram in excellent condition from the stud of Mr H. J. Andrew, of Maheno, realized the top price of 33 guineas. The animal was purchased by Mr L. Gilkison, of Castlerock. There was one Border Leicester exhibited. . , . , In comparison with the previous sale there was an increase of 170 in the entries in the flock Southdown section. The bidding was quite brisk at times and fair prices were realized for good-quality animals. The top price was 13 guineas and this was considerably lower than the top figure paid in 1938. The ram was offered by Mr H. J Andrew, of Maheno, and was bought by Mr L P. Healy, of McNab. FREQUENT PASSINGS

The demand for Border Leicesters was not good and passings were Sequent. Buyers appeared to take little interest in this breed and although there was no doubt about the quality of the sheep the prices secured were not high. Mr J. Macdonald, of Mataura, paid the top price for two oneshear rams offered by Mr J. A. Edwards, of Otikerama. In the English Leicester section the bidding was also slack and more than half the lots offered were passed. The exhibits were good representatives of the breed, but in spite of this the prices were only fair. Stud Romney Marsh ewes were included in this year’s sale, but although the sheep were exhibited in fine condition the prices realized were fairly low. The demand for the Southdown ewes was only fair. . The entries for the last two fairs in the individual sections are as follows: STUD SHEEP
