YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUBS

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS CONGRATULATED

PRESENTATIONS MADE BY DISTRICT COMMITTEE

The success of Mr J. Winter (Wyndham) and Mr F. J. Dolamore (Woodlands) in winning the Southland Frozen Meat Company’s Lincoln College scholarships was referred to at a meeting of the Western district committee of the Young Farmers’ Clubs yesterday. Reference was made to Mr G. O. Fallow (Thornbury), who has won an Otago-Southland scholarship for Lincoln College and to Mr K. Hargest (Woodlands), who will also be attending the college. The president (Mr W. R. Harris) presented fountain pens to these young farmers on behalf of the district committee.

Pleasure at the number of applicants for the scholarships was expressed by Mr Harris, who said that this showed that the young farmers appreciated what was being done by the frozen meat company to assist and encourage the movement. The selection committee had had a difficult task in selecting the candidates because they all showed great ability. Mr J. M. Smith, fields superintendent for Otago and Southland, extended congratulations to the scholarship holders and the other members who were going to the college. He was pleased to know that the candidates showed great promise, he said. Unfortunately, they had been unable to give scholarships in Dunedin this year because the applicants did not come up to the required standard. During the last few years a number of young farmers had gone to the college from the Otago district, but some of them had not made good. He hoped that the candidates from Southland would take advantage of their opportunity and pass on what they had learned to other club members when they returned. It would be a big loss to the club when these young farmers left to go to the college, said Mr J. Carnegy Gardner. However, he hoped that there would be others to take their place. A letter was received from the trustees of the R. M. MacKinnon Trust advising that the sum of £l5 had been allocated to the committee.

Suggestions about the programme for the agricultural instruction course at Gore towards the end of April were discussed.

There were present Messrs W. R. Harris, L. Harboard, K. Hargest, J. Winter, J. Ronald, G. O. and D. Fallow, A. Campbell and the secretary (Mr A. Stewart).
