DEGREES IN THEOLOGY

UNIVERSITY SENATE TO ASK FOR AUTHORITY (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, February 6. The Senate of the University of New Zealand decided today to approach the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) for power to confer degrees in theology. The suggestion was made that the churches should organize a board' of studies and secure a parliamentary charter enabling the board to confer degrees. It was stated that a memorandum had been submitted by the church representatives and this memorandum proposed that degrees should be available only to those who were already graduates of the University of New Zealand or some other approved university. The Senate today agreed to recognize Dr V. E. Galway, of Dunedin, who is to be appointed to the Chair of Music at Otago University,' as a professor of the University of New Zealand.
