P. SPRATT’S FOUR SUCCESSES

STABLE DOUBLE TO P. T. HOGAN

two-year-olds make FAST TIME (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, February 4. Dividend was made a slightly better favourite than Recollection for the Hornby Brush Hurdles, but although making a game attempt he was no match on the day for Recollection, who gave a much better display when the pace was on. Dividend went to the front at the mile post, but Recollection had him in trouble half a mile from home and from then onward, although having to be kept up to his work at the last fence, his task was easy. Dividend certainly got up to within a length of him at the post, but only under sufferance. The rest were outclassed, the third horse, Courtyard, being about 20 lengths away, clear of Grampian, with Metal Bird in the rear. Supreme Court blundered at the second fence and threw his rider. As in the hurdle race, the Trial Stakes resulted in a duel between two horses. Rex Maitland led on to the course proper from Spartan, Queen Linda and Improvident and when Rex Maitland was in trouble a furlong from home, Improvident moved up to Spartan and this pair settled down to a sustained struggle. Improvident got to within a head of Spartan 100 yards from home, but could not do any better and Spartan recorded his first win in a highly creditable manner. Rex Maitland hung on for a fair third, two lengths in front of Neptune, with Lady Kinnoull and Papernilla next. The second choice, Chit Chat, drifted to a rear position early. MIDDLE PARK PLATE The Middle Park Plate was won by the Myosotis colt, Moorsotis, who was not prominent until well into the run home. Rebel Rank led on to the course proper from Gold Salute. Wild Talk, Globe Trotter and Moorsotis. and after Gold Salute had beaten off Rebel Rank, Wild Talk took charge and looked a likely winner until .Moorsotis made his claim on the outside. Finishing with rare dash he gradually worked his way to the front and. although Wild Talk stuck to her difficult task gamely, Moorsotis did not concede any ground and won well. Gold Salute stayed on for third, three lengths in front of Globe Trotter, who was beaten a good way from home. The winner is the first of . the Myosotis breed to get on the winning list and a bright future appears to be in store for him. Trench Fight essayed to win the Midsummer Handicap from end to end and when he entered the straight two lengths clear of Queen of Song . and Haughty Winner it looked as if he would hold his position to the end, but a furlong from home he was in trouble and quickly submitted to Queen of Song’s challenge. The latter was well back with half the journey covered, but then made a fast forward move and was in second place to Trench Fight entering the straight, . with Haughty Winner in a handy position on the rails and Nightdress and Sovereign Lady next, but weakening. Queen of Song gradually overhauled the leader and was going away to win by a length. Haughty Winner, with no chance of winning, was eased up nearing the post, but still comfortably held third place from Rabble, who came from well back. Sovereign Lady and Nightdress were next. WAKA WINS WELL Waka made amends for his several minor places by winning the Halswell Hack Handicap after going to the front a furlong from home. He was in last place with Elmarch at the half-mile, but with a fast forward move was on terms with Rebel Queen and Screamer entering the straight. The two lastnamed did not last long and Waka drew to the front from Glenacre and Lofty, with Capricious and Settlement closing up from rear positions. A great finish ensued, with Waka holding on to gain a narrow verdict from Capricious, who got up in the last few strides to beat Glenacre, while Settlement also came with a late tun. There was then a gap to Master Dingle, Lofty and Rebel Queen. LYTTELTON PLATE The success of Moorsotis suggested the chances of his stablemate, Prudent Prince, in the Lyttelton Plate, as this pair had done most of their galloping together, with Prudent Prince always doing as well, if not better, than his mate. Nevertheless Prudent Prince was only third choice and paid double figures. The favourite, Master Hotspur, led on to the course proper from Not Out, Montessa, Prudent Prince and Scold, but was overhauled by Prudent Prince nearing the post, with Scold also appearing with a late run. In a hard tussle Prudent Prince gained a narrow verdict from Scold, who just headed Master Hotspur. Montessa, who was never dangerous, was three lengths away in front of Not Out and Night Shift. The winner is by Lord Quex from a sister to Cuddle, and Scold is by Myosotis from Berate, a half-sister to Silver Scorn. TOP ROW’S SPRINT Top Row won the Craven Plate after a stirring finish and thus completed the double for P. T. Hogan. Phalanx and Second Innings were fighting out the final tussle when Top Row pushed through on the fence and, carrying on, won well. Wine Card came from the back to get to within a head of Second Innings, with Phalanx another head away. Glenogil and Golden Chest were next. Top Row had a well-deserved win as he has been racing fairly consistently since his return from Melbourne. Second Innings put up a solid fight, while Wine Card was very unlucky in being asked to give the leaders a big break turning for home. The favourite, Fidelis, never threatened danger. Teak went to the front as soon as the straight was reached in the concluding event and soon opened up a break from Synthetic, Density, Garonne, Passenger and Plumage. He appeared to have a decisive victory in view until Rebellion came from a rear position to issue a determined challenge. The latter was overhauling Teak at every stride and only failed by half a head to get up. In another stride he would have been an easy winner. Plumage, who was one of the last away, did well to secure third place from Garonne, with Lady Middleham. also slow early, next, in front of Aggravate and Passenger. Density disputed the lead with Synthetic to the home turn where she compounded and Synthetic also failed to go on, finishing near the rear.
