RETURNS FOR LATEST PERIODS

WELLINGTON, February 4.
The unemployment returns for the four-weekly periods ended December 17, 1938, and January 14, 1939, were issued yesterday by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb. The returns, which include those on the register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment are as follows:— Dec. 17 Jan. 14 1938 1939 Registered but not on relief _ _ 407 553 On sustenance awaiting placement—on Scheme 5 relief 510 483 Total 917 1036 On sustenance unfit for employment for r "’p thealth or other rea- .■ sons, but being afforded relief from the ■. f \ Employment Promo- ' tion Fund 7285 7809 The January figures disclose a reduction of 7211 as against the corresponding figure for January 15, 1938. For the four-weekly periods under review the expenditure from the fund under the heading of promotion of employment as distinct from relief expenditure was estimated at £516,880 for December and £429,081 for January.
