SOUTHLAND RINK CHAMPIONSHIP

Opening Rounds Played BLUFF WINS FOUR GAMES FOUR ONE-LIFERS LEFT IN COMPETITION The Southland provincial rink bowls championship, known for many years as the Shield Rink competition, was begun on the Southland green on Saturday. Entries were received from 16 of the 27 clubs affiliated to the Southland Bowling Centre, and the competition was played on the automatic twolife system, teams beaten twice dropping out of the competition. . At the end of the day’s play, during which four rounds had been played, there remained four city teams and one country team, Bluff, one of the city teams, not having been beaten, and Riverton, Waikiwi, Te Rang* and Northend each with one life. The remaining rounds and, final will be played on March 11. ' . . , Playing conditions were fan: throughout the day. Early morning ram had the effect of making the green heavy, and the playing of the first round of games was delayed for two hours. For the afternoon and evening games the conditions were good. The first round produced the usual surprise results, some of the betterperformed rinks being decisively beaten and several of the lesser-known teams producing good form and securing good wins. ’Hie win of the Edendale rink, always a strong contender tor championship honours, amounted to a runaway victory against the Northena team. Edendale scored 35 points to Northend’s four, a result probably without parallel in the history of the competition. Northend scored on the first end, but after that did not look like a winning combination. Its score was made up of singles on the first, fifth, thirteenth and seventeenth ends. Edendale scored on 15 of the 19 ends played and got “plants” of six, five and four. At one stage the score was 28 points to two. Te Rangi’s success against Gore was clean-cut and showed that it had a combination likely to play a prominent part in the decision of the championship. Te Rangi went on to win its next two games, but lost a life to the unbeaten Bluff team in the fourth round, a game the result of which was in doubt until the last bowl had been played. Waikiwi’s win against Mataura was a good one, but Riverton just got home against Georgetown after being down 14- at the thirteenth end. A six on the fifteenth end gave Riverton alead which it held till the bell rang. There was only a point between the teams. Waihopai and Wyndham had a good even contest. Halfway through the game Wyndham led 15-9. but, Waihopai recovered well, and scoring 12 points on six of the last seven ends it won by five points. Bluff’s first win was secured after gaining a big lead in the first half of the board. On the tenth end Bluff led 15- Southland then got the mat and put on 13 points in five of the last seven ends, but was unable to overtake Bluff’s score. . . Probably the biggest surprise of the first round was R.S.A.’s score, of 32 to 11 against the strong Hokonui team. Hokonui scored on five ends. Included in R.S_A.’s total was a six, a five and a Woodlands scored on 10 ends and Invercargill scored on seven, but it was Invercargill who won. Invercargill s total was largely made up of threes, a four, a five and a six. WYNDHAM’S “EIGHT" In the second round Hokonui, Georgetown, Woodlands and Gore were eliminated. The biggest wins of the round were those scored by Wyndham against Gore (26 to 9) and Waikiwi against Riverton (25 to 12). Wyndham scored an eight against Gore, the possible being obtained on the third end. The end of the third round saw the field reduced to eight, two two-lifers and six one-lifers. Southland, Wyndham, R.S.A. and Invercargill were eliminated. R.S.A. and Riverton had a hard fight and the result was the smallest score of the day. Riverton won by 15 to eight. Fourteen singles were scored, and the biggest result was a three, scored by Riverton. Te Rangi’s defeat of Edendale was decisive, but Waihopai had a close call against Invercargill, the difference being one point after Waihopai had a lead of seven two ends from the finish. Mataura easily accounted for Southland, Northend scored a comfortable win against Wyndham, and Bluff won by more than two to one against Waikiwi. , The fourth round caused much interest Three of the four games were very closely contested, all being decided on the last ends played. Bluff was one down on the total in a lowscoring game against Te Rangi when the last end was played, but managed to score two points and win. The Edendale-Waikiwi game produced an exciting finish. Edendale led for the greater part of the game, but with the last end to play was two down. Edendale lay a tie with a bowl to play, but Hall (Edendale) could not draw the winning shot. An extra end was played and when the skips (Hall and Thomson) changed over the shot was against Waikiwi. Thomson drove with his first, taking the kitty to the ditch, and when Hall failed to beat the shot Waikiwi had won one of the best games of the day. Northend had a narrow escape against Mataura after being in the comfortable position of 15-8 five ends from the finish. Patchy drawing by the Northend team enabled Mataura to get in and score 10 points—a six and a four—on the fourteenth and fifteenth ends. Northend was three down, but scored a single, a three and a single on the remaining ends and won by two points. The form of Te Rangi and Bluff was the most consistent of the day and it is possible that these teams will contest the final. Following are the results:— FIRST ROUND BIVERTON (A. T. Hogg, J. W.
