DEDUCTION FROM SALARIES OF BRITISH MEMBERS

(Received February 3, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, February 2.

A private member’s motion on a scheme for pensions for past members of the House of Commons over 60 years of age with less than £3 a week on which to live was moved in the House of Commons by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Assheton Pownall (Conservative). He said £1 a month deducted from the salary of all members of the House of Commons would yield £7OOO a year. The pensions would be at the rate of £l5O a year for those needing them. Mr Chamberlain, supporting the motion, pointed out that the scheme imposed no charge on the public funds. , The motion was carried by 204 votes to 103.
