JAPANESE NAVAL FORCE FIRE ON AEROPLANE

STATEMENT BY SPOKESMAN (Received February 3, 5.5 p.m.) TOKYO, February 2. The Admiralty Spokesman admitted that a naval force at Waichow Island fired on “a mystery aeroplane of unknown nationality” in self-defence.

Captain Wilson, pilot of the Imperial Airways machine Delia, en route to Hanoi from Hong Kong, wirelessed that the Delia had been fired on by warships west of Waichow Island, in the gulf of Tongking. The liner, which was not damaged, carried two British passengers.
