1939 DAVIS CUP
ENTRIES FROM 27 NATIONS ’ BRAZIL ALONE IN SOUTH AMERICAN ZONE (Received February 1, 10.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, February 1. Twenty-seven nations have filed entries for the Davis Cup competition. They are: North American Zone.—Australia, Canada, Cuba, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines. South American Zone.—Brazil.
European Zone.—Belgium, China, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Germany, Britain, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Rumania, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia. It is not officially determined but it is believed that Brazil will meet the winner of the North American zone.
The sports writer of the United Press comments: “All but Australia might as well quit now and save their money. The list numbers three more than last year, but they could add another couple of dozen and the odds would still be in favour of Australia to meet the United States in the challenge round.”
