The Social Round

The engagement is announced of Jessie Elizabeth, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Gorton, Tahakopa, to Cyril Herbert, second son of Mr and Mrs E. Hayes, Tahakopa.
Mrs H. Bannerman, Timaru, is the guest of Mrs E. Nichol, Bluff. Misses Peggy Foster and Jean Browne returned on Monday from a holiday at Queenstown.
Miss Wyn Gray, Feilding, who has been visiting relations in Invercargill, has returned home.’
Miss Nancye Davis, Christchurch, who has been visiting Invercargill, has returned home.
Mrs D. Robertson, of Tussock Creek, is staying with Mrs J. Lanstby, jun. for the week-end.
Miss Chrissie Sheddon, Gore, has been spending a few days with her mother at Otautau.
Miss Jessie Cunningham, South Hillend, has returned to her home after spending a holiday in the North Island. Miss Mary Nichol, Clifton, was hostess at a handkerchief afternoon yesterday for Miss Zona Nichol, Bluff, who is to be married next week. Mrs F. G. O’Beime, Esk street, was hostess at tea yesterday afternoon in honour of Mrs L. W. Fulcher and Miss Joyce Gilmour who leave shortly for England.
Mrs S. C. K. Smith, of Mitchell street, who has been on a holiday visit to the North Island and who took part in the
North Island women’s croquet tournament at Auckland, returned to Invercargill by the express last evening.
The president and members of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Federation of University Women were “at home,” last evening, in Allen Hall, Dimedin, in honour of the delegates attending the Dominion conference which opens today at 2.30 p.m.
Lady Angela Dawnay, who has been residing in Remuera, Auckland, for the last two and a-half years, will leave from Wellington by the Awatea on Monday for Sydney, en route to England. Lady Angela is a sister of the Duchess of Gloucester.
Miss Elizabeth Loe, of London, until recently a British Drama League tutor from the Central School of Dramatic Art, London, and the Hull Repertory Theatre, to the New Zealand branch of the league, has arrived in Auckland and will take up her residence there. Mrs John Robertson, Grey street, was hostess at tea yesterday afternoon, at the Country Club, in honour of Mrs R.
J. Campbell, Upper Hutt. Those present were Mesdames W. T. Smith, W. Herbison, A. McKendry, Misses E. M. Stead, B. Corrie, E. Herbison and R. Herbison.
The death has occurred at Milford-on-Sea of Miss Winifred L. BoysSmith, formerly of the University of Otago. Miss Boys-Smith had been living in England for some years. At one time she was a voluntary worker on the staff of the Rothamsted Experimental Station, where she was engaged on illustrations for the British Empire exhibit. Miss Boys-Smith was 73 years of age.
