CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CANTERBURY TWO RECORDS BROKEN (United Press Association) ■ CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. The Canterbury swimming championships were begun this afternoon when two records were broken. W. Hart broke the New . Zealand record for the intermediate boys’ 100 yards backstroke by 9 1-5 seconds. Miss R. Low broke her own provincial record for 100 yards backstroke by 4 seconds. Results:— OPEN EVENTS 50 YARDS, men.—D. H. Symes 1, H. Goldsmith 2. Time, 0.25 4-5. 220 YARDS, men.—A. T. F. Stokes I, L. Newell 2 Won by a touch. Time, 2.32. ‘ 880 YARDS, men.—A. T. F. Stokes 1, The only starter. Time, 11.32 3-5. 100 YARDS BACKSTROKE, women. —Miss R. Low 1, Miss B. Graham 2. Time, 1.3 (a Canterbury record). 100 YARDS, women.—Miss B. Rae 1, Miss B. Graham 2. 0.75 2-5. INTERMEDIATE EVENTS 100 YARDS BACKSTROKE, boys.— W. Hart 1, J. Ganderson 2, Time, 1.13 (a New Zealand record). .100 YARDS BREASTSTROKE, boys. J. Erikson 1. The only starter. Swimming at Manly, Biddulph beat Nakama for the 200 yards state title by a yard, taking 2.16 3-5.
