NEW SALEYARDS AT GORE

application for LICENCE PERMIT GRANTED SUBJECT TO CONDITIONS An application by the Central Saleyards Company, Gore, for a licence for the new saleyards at Gore caused a long discussion at yesterdays meeting of the Southland County Council, members speaking to a motion and an amendment, and expressing their views more than once. Cr J. McNeill moved that the licence be granted subject to the yards and buildings being erected to the satisfaction of the Health Department and the engineer. The motion was seconded by Cr A. S. McNaught, but was deferred following an amendment that the application be referred to the Southland Hospital Board for a recommendation. The discussion followed representations made to the council by Mr Hugh Smith, who opposed the proposed site, and Mr J. F. Grant, who favoured it. One of the main points at issue was the relationship of the yards to the hospital, and it was claimed that the yards would be at least 21 chains from the hospital. The amendment was lost, ana tne motion was carried. Cr L. A. Niederer immediately moved that it be rescinded. “There has been a smell about this from start to finish, he declared. The chairman (Cr C. W. Whittingham): I object to that. ' Cr Niederer: Well, the chairman of the Hospital Board was here and he never stood up to say where the Hospital Board stands in this matter.. “I can’t allow you to say that in Cr Golden’s absence,” said the chairman. , . ~ s T Cr Niederer (banging the table): 1 would say the same if he were here. He represents the Hospital Board and has not done his duty. Cr Niederer insisted that in moving that the motion be rescinded he did not need a seconder. There was some'discussion on procedure, and the acting clerk (Mr B. Noble) said that if the motion was carried unanimously the original motion was rescinded then and there. If not, the mover would have to give notice of motion, and this would be dealt with at the next meeting. Cr Niederer’s motion was not unanimously supported and he gave notice for the next meeting.
