YACHTING
IDLE-ALONG EVENTS AT NELSON (United Press Association) NELSON, January 13. With three of the five races fot the Idlealong yachting championship completed the Rose Marie is leading with 16 points, the Tornado has 12; the Mayfair 11, the Vagabond nine and the Marita seven.
On sailing performances Wellington should have had 18 points for three wins, but in the resailed second event this morning the Tornado was disqualified on a technicality for not being in the water sailing when the flags were raised five minutes before the start. The judge’s report placing the Rose Marie first, the Vagabond second and the Mayfair third was adopted by the committee of delegates. The Marita was sailing well when she struck a sandbank, damaging her boom and also the rudder stay„ but repairs enabled her to start this afternoon.
The afternoon race resulted: Tornado 1, Rose Marie 2, Marita 3, Mayfair 4 and Vagabond 5. The event was of 11 miles over a three-point course and tjie time taken was lhr 26min 32sec. The Marita was holding second place until turning for the final beat to the finishing line, when the Rose Marie forced the Canterbury boat off the wind on the port tack and then held her safely until the finish. The Tornado has been definitely the superior boat so far in the contest and will be unfortunate if the disqualification loses the contest for her.
