Dr Edouard Herriot, in a Remarkable inaugural speech after his election as President of the Chamber of Deputies, warned France that civilization is threatened by growing anarchy all over the world. “Our age has shown a return to the cruellest periods of the past,” said
Dr Herriot. “Political and religious liberty is besieged and persecution is rife.”
Dr Herriot thanked the Pope and the President of the United States (Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt) for making a stand against violence. . He said there was no Frenchman who did not desire peace, but a free people could not allow its frontier to be the subject of bargaining. France hoped for better relations with Germany after recognition of her frontiers.
