DANGER FROM DAM IN NEW SOUTH WALES
REMEDIAL MEASURES TO BE TAKEN SYDNEY, January 13. The. Premier of New South Wales (Mr B. S. B. Stevens) announced that the Government was greatly concerned by the rapid deterioration of the Burrinjuck Dam in southern New South Wales as disclosed by overseas engineering experts. The. report revealed that the dam, in major flood conditions, would be a source of danger to the population in the immediate neighbourhood. “The experts’ examination revealed that the walls are in course of disintegration and that the remedial measures are urgently necessary,” said Mr Stevens. “The cost of these will be about £1,750,000.” The Cabinet, he added, had adopted the report. Work would be provided for more than 400 men for from five to seven years. i
The original capacity of the dam was 745,000 acre feet of water. Plans for the safety of persons who would be in the path of the dam if it burst had been prepared by the Government.
