THE WEATHER UNSETTLED WITH RAIN

WELLINGTON, January 13. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland, issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:—

Strong west to north winds reaching gale force in places. Weather becoming unsettled with rain developing from the west. Temperatures mild to warm. Seas rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Some showers about Foveaux Strait; otherwise weather mainly fair; clouding over, however, in districts with a westerly aspect with rain developing in Westland and the far south and probably becoming more general after 24 to 36 hours. Temperatures cola tonight in the south, otherwise mil'’ to warm. General Situation.—Yesterday’s depression has passed eastward, but a new and extensive one now covers south-eastern Australia and should be affecting the South Island by tomorrow. There are slight indications also that a disturbance is developing north of Norfolk Island. Winds.—Moderate to strong westerly or south-westerly predominating at first, but a change to north-westerlies or northerlies advancing from the south and north-westerlies reaching gale force later in placer south of New Plymouth and Napier. < Seas. —In New Zealand waters rough south of Cape Egmont and becoming rough in Cook Strait; otherwise slight or modepate. In the eastern Tasman Sea light westerly winds and slight seas in the northern portion, freshening northerly winds with moderate but rising seas in the southern portion.
