SUPREME COURT RETURN

CRIMINAL AND CIVIL CASES FOR 1938

The annual return of the Supreme Court at Invercargill states that during 1938 the Court sat for eight days on criminal cases and 19 days on civil cases. There were 49 summonses, 12 civil cases before the Judge alone and four civil cases before the Jvr’je and a common jury. There were 19 petitions filed in divorce.

Motions for probate or letters of administration number 267 and there were 12 creditors’ or debtors’ etitions filed in bankruptcy. The number of chattels securities filed was 766, and miscellaneous applications numbered 31. There was one appeal from an inferioi Court. Five persons were convicted, one was acquitted and seven were sentenced.
