N.Z. CROQUET CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEK

The 1939 croquet championships of New Zealand are to be played in Palmerston North, starting on Thursday. Beside the main championship there will be played the men’s championship of New Zealand, the women’s championship of New Zealand and the New Zealand championship doubles. In all these events the best croquet players of New Zealand will compete, including Mrs C. Watkins, of Hawke’s Bay, the present holder of the open championship, C. La Roche, of Wanganui, holder of the men’s championship, Mrs Anstis, of Palmerston North, holder of the women’s championship, Mrs A. H. Morgan, and Captain F. L. Hartnell, of Taranaki, winners of the doubles championship. Besides the present holders former winners of these main events will be competing, notably A. G. F. Ross, of Christchurch, A. J. Gibbs, of Patea, R. W. McCreath, of Gore, r.nd H. P. Stratton, of Hawke’s Bay. Soifthland will be well represented at the meeting. Three minus players will take part—R. W. McCreath and Mrs G. McLeod, of the Gore Club, and Mrs R. J. Telfer, of the Invercargill Club. Mrs J. T. Wilson, of Northend, Mrs R. W. McCreath, of Gore, and Miss M. C. Perrin, of the Invercargill Club, are also playing. In the doubles championship Mrs J. T. Wilson and R. W. McCreath will be partners, as will Mrs G. McLeod and Mrs R. J. Telfer. Mrs McCreath and Miss M. C. Pen-in will play in the level singles for players with 3J bisques and over, and will be partners in the handicap doubles. Before the start of the championships meeting an interesting teams match will be played between six North Island and six South Island representatives. Six doubles (single games) will be played doublesf single games) will be played to determine the winners of this event.

At the annual meeting of the council which will be held before the tournament starts, final arrangements will be made for the centennial croquet events. It is already known that a first-class team from England, and several teams from Australia, will take part.
