CALL ACCEPTED BY MINISTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A congregational meeting was held in the Tapanui Presbyterian Sunday School Hall to decide on a call to the Rev. J. S. Somerville to the Tapanui parish. It was unanimously agreed to extend the call, which has since been signed by 96 members and 32 adherents at Tapanui, Waikoikoi and Conical Hills. The call was presented to the Mataura Presbytery and sustained, and Mr Somerville has accepted it. ■ POULTRY CLUB Only eight members attended the annual meeting of the Tapanui Poultry and Produce Club. The balance-sheet showed a loss of £ll for the year, and the chairman commented on the lack of support from the public. Mr McAuley gave notice, of motion that the club be wound up because of lack of support, and that a special meeting be held to discuss the position. CONCERT AND DANCE The members of the Tapanui Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and Plunket Society combined to give a concert and dance in aid of the funds for Chinese relief, die Plunket Society and the Karitane Hospital. The stage of the Town Hall was decorated, and a good programme was presented to a big audience. The items were: Pianoforte duet, Mesdames Edr gar and Brooke; “Fairy Frolics,” by 10 little girls; song, Master R. Kirk; Irish jig and Highland fling, Miss P. Potts; song, Mrs Coubrough; nautical scena by the juniors in sailor costumes, with Misses M. and Q. Auld and A. Brooke singing solos, and Miss M. Maxwell dancing a hornpipe. Mr W. Spittle sang, and Mrs Styles gave a musical monologue. Misses J. and A. Brooke and J. Arnold sang “I Love to Whistle, and Miss A. Brooke gave a tap-dance. A pretty Japanese scene was presented by the junior girls. In the second part of the programme, solos were sung by Mrs Coubrough, arid Mr W. Spittle, a sword dance was given by Miss P. Potts, and a waltz was performed by six juniors in costume. This was followed by a tap-dance by Miss Maxwell. Mrs Styles’s musical monologues, “A Cockney Girl at the Cinema” and “If Only,” were much enjoyed. A playette, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” concluded the programme. Mesdames Edgar and Brooke and Miss M. Kerse played the accompaniments, and Mr Corbett played the bagpipe accompaniments for the Highland dancing. At the conclusion of the concert programme, Mrs Arnold thanked all who had assisted with the programme, especially Mrs Brooke, who prepared the programme. TUG-O’-WAR TOURNAMENT A tug-o’-war tournament held in the Town Hall by the Tapanui Fire Brigade was very successful. The officials, with Captain Strong in charge, and Fireman R. Duff as secretary, managed all arrangements well, and the events were completed in good time. A number of competitions was held. Nine teams competed in the tug-o’-war. A cake-guessing competition was won by Mrs Mercer, a box of chocolates by Mr T. Valli (Redan) and a bag of potatoes by Mrs M. Hoffman (Gore). Mr J. McGowan won the trophy for the shooting. During the evening a Gore women’s team gave an exhibition pull of one minute against the Kelso public works camp, and, after a keen struggle, the women won. Mr O. L. Munyard presented the cups to the captains of the winning teams, congratulating them on their success. Results were: Lightweight.—First round, Castlerock beat Union; Country (Mataura) won by default from Kelso; Redan beat Public Works Camp. Second round, Country beat ■ Redan. Final, Country beat Castlerock. Heavyweight.—First round, Hoffman’s (Gore) beat Union; Castlerock beat Union by default. Final, Castlerock beat Hoffman’s. QUEENSTOWN SPECIALS
