NEW ZEALAND AND NAVAL DEFENCE
To The Editor Sir, —In your leading articles and inletters written by retired naval officers, you do excellent work for the safety of New Zealand. But all these efforts are likely to be unavailing unless you attack the institutions responsible for the apathy of New Zealanders in this vital matter. The Anglican Church has some 600,000 adherents in New Zealand. ■ The synod of that church definitely teaches that a defensive war is contrary to the will of God. How can you expect the 600,000 Anglicans to take any interest in defence ? Then we have the League of Nations Union, so called because it denies pll allegiance to the Covenant of the League of Nations. With these two powerfill bodies, and most of the free churches working against you and your patriotic warnings, what success can you hope for? New Zealand and the whole British Empire is rotten to the core.—Yours, etc., J. P. DAKIN. December 15, 1938.
