RECORDS BROKEN AT BATHS Intermediate And Junior Swimmers PROVINCIAL TITLES DECIDED EVENTS PROVIDE KEEN COMPETITION Two Southland records were broken at the Southland junior and intermediate swimming championship carnival in the municipal baths last night. W. Johnson broke the existing record for the 220 yards men’s championship by 1 3-ssec and D. C. Berry established a new record for the 100 yards backstroke. The majority of the events, both championship and handicap, produced, keen races and close finishes. The * crowd was io a big one, but those present saw some excellent swimming. In the 220 yards championship race Johnson left no doubt about his ability as a swimmer with a splendid style and his win was well deserved. He led for , more than half the distance and never looked like being beaten. Berry’s attempt on the Southland 100 vards backstroke record was made in the final of the 100 yards open race. In breaking C. Martin’s record of 70sec by three seconds he put up a splendid performance. Thirteen championship events, including diving, were held during the evening and all of the races produced good competition. Taken as a whole the times were good, although none of the records for the other championship events appeared to be in danger of being broken. The handicap races attracted big entries and there was some fast swimming. The names of the swimming clubs have been vontracted in the results as follows—Murihiku, M.; Ex-pupils, Ex-p.; Collegiate, C. The results are as follows:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS 50 YARDS JUNIOR GIRLS. Johnson went on to win by a big margin from the other two competitors. Millar tired at the end and was beaten into third place by Berry. Time, 2.31 1-5, a Southland record. 100 YARDS WOMEN. MATAURA DEFEATS WYNDHAM SPOONER IN GOOD FORM WITH BAT The weather was perfect for a cricket match at Mataura between the Wyndham and Mataura teams. Mataura had a good win. The visitors batted first, and were all out for 62 runs, J. McKay being the only player to stand up against the bowling. For Mataura, J. Folster maintained an’excellent length throughout and his average of six wickets for 10 runs was well deserved. C. Larking bowled only one over and took one for six. Opening for Mataura, M. McGowan and J. Spooner were soon on top of the bowling. Spooner C6B) gave a good display of sound batting. M. McGowan retired at 45, but his batting was uninteresting. The home team passed the visitors’ total with no wickets down, and carried its total to 200. Apart from the opening batsmen, I. Maslin (35) was the only other player who impressed. Bowling for Wyndham, D. Findlay, with six wickets for 39 runs, had the best average. Withey (none for 52) kept a better length and was unlucky in not securing wickets. Scores were:
