BOYS AND GIRLS TAKE PART

AGRICULTURAL CLUBS SECTION MARKED IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARD, A marked improvement in the standard of the exhibits and the increased interest shown in the section were features of the classes of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs which were judged yesterday. The entry of calves exceeded former entries and there was keen competition in every class. In the milking shorthorn class- the judge, Mr J. Edgar, of Seadown, said the exhibitors had shown care in the rearing of the animals. The first prizewinner, Kennington Sylvia, exhibited by Margaret Fox (Waimahaka) had been well prepared and had hair like velvet.

Both the entries and the quality of the exhibits in the Friesian section were-very good, said the judge, Mr C. A. Knutson, of Carterton. The winning calf, exhibited by George Eades (West Plains) was outstanding and was produced in first-class condition. The

second calf, exhibited by Fergus McCallum (Isla Bank) was also a good one, but smaller than the winner. The winning calf in the Ayrshire section exhibited by Helen Blakie (Ryal Bush) was a particularly outstanding heifer and gave promise of being a very fit entry for the Royal Shov? next year, said the judge, Mr C. J. Cowan, of Oamaru. The second calf, shown by Jessie Blakie (Ryal Bush) had a narrow face and was not so nice in the tail and head as the winner. There were eight entries in the Jersey calf section. It was a good class and competition was keen. Good quality in abundance was seen in the whole of the class and the first and second prize calves, shown respectively by Jack McKenzie (Clifton) who exhibited Avons Mayflower, and Lindsay Johnston (Waikaka Valley) were of excellent quality.
