OFFERING AT GORE FAIR COMPETITION FOR SEVERAL LOTS There was only fair competition for a freehold farm property of 252 acres, 32 building sites situated in Broughton .street, a coal mine and plant, several building sites in Devon and William streets and a five-roomed bungalow in William street when they were offered for sale by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., in its office, Mersey street, Gore, yesterday, acting on the instructions of the trustees of Mr Thomas Green. The offering was auctioned in lots, but in each case toe prices secured did not come up to toe reserve and each lot was passed in. The farm property was offered first a'nd was passed in at £22 an acre. The five-roomed bungalow was next to come under toe hammer and it was passed in at £6OO. The building sites in Broughton street were passed in at from £35 to £4O a section, and the sites in William and Devon streets were passed in at up to £lOO. The coal mine was passed in along with the farm. WHEAT, OATS AND BARLEY ESTIMATED RETURNS DECLINE IN ACREAGES OF TWO CROPS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 1. The estimated returns for wheat, oats and barley this year compared with the actual returns for toe past harvest, show a decline in the areages of wheat and oats, but a slight increase in barley. The estimates are contained in a return by the Government Statistician and appear in tonight’s Gazette. , The total area sown in wheat for the 1937-38 season was 191,842 acres, while toe estimated area for 1939 totals .188,900, comprising 3200 acres in toe North Island and 185,700 in the south. The area sown in oats in 1937-38 was 289,763 acres, while the estimated total for toe present season is 263,000 acres, comprising 13,000 acres in the North Island and 250,000 in the south. The barley acreage last year was 31,604 acres and the estimate for this year is 33,700, comprising 3200 acres in the North Island and 30,500 in toe South Island.

The final area planted in potatoes last year was 23,090 acres, 5442 acres being in toe North Island and 17,648 in toe South, while the estimated return for this year is 20,000 acres, 5300 acres being in toe North Island'and 14,700 in toe South.
