SPORTS TRUST TROPHY PRESENTED

WINNER OF NAVIGATION COMPETITION

Mr R. Buchanan, winner of the navigation competition conducted by the Southland Aero Club, was presented with the Sports Trust trophy last night by Mr R. M. Strang, a member of the Southland Amateur Sports Trust and of the committee of the aero club. There was a good attendance of members of the club.

Mr A. E. W. McDonald, president of the club, said that the trophy Had. been presented to further aviation and particularly certain sections of the aviation work. The trophy provided a competition that was a little different from the usual work. The standard of performance had shown a marked improvement this year and the general standard of flying had improved tremendously. Referring to the scholarships made available by the trust, Mr McDonald said that another scholarship would be announced soon. It would give two boys in Southland free tuition in flying. “The trust takes a keen interest in all sports,” said Mr Strang. “We recognize that in assisting the aero club we are not only giving pleasure to the winners of the competition, but we are helping the country. We have been congratulated by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) on the work we have done in training boys.” Aviation was entering more and more into commerce, continued Mr Strang. Travel by air eliminated much waste time and also enabled business men to complete transactions much more quickly, he said. In making the presentation Mr Strang stated that it was pleasing to see the younger members coming to the fore. They were becoming more efficient and were able to take their place among more experienced pilots. Mr Strang congratulated Mr Buchanan on his fine performance. He also presented him with a barometer on behalf of the club. Mr Buchanan replied.

Mr F. Jones and Mr W. A. Cameron also congratulated Mr Buchanan on his success.

Mr J. E. Cuthill accepted a barometer on behalf of Mr F. W. HallJones, the runner-up in the competition.
