NINE HOLES IN 27 STROKES
YOUNG GOLFER’S AMAZING SCORING
A young Canterbury University student, A. J. C. Nicholson, who is spending his vacation with his parents in New Plymouth and was a semifinalist in the South Island amateur golf championships at Russley, Christchurch, put up a splendid performance on the. Westown course at the weekend. He did the last nine holes in 27, six strokes under the scratch score.
Nicholson holed a yard putt for a two at the tenth and at the next, a bogey four, he reached the green with a tremendous drive and claimed a 3. His third successive birdie was attained at the twelfth. A bogey 3 followed and at the fourteenth he holed a foot putt for 2. After two orthodox 3’s he finished splendidly with birdies at the seventeenth and eighteenth. The score was obtained without any long putts. Nicholson was playing his irons with wonderful accuracy and it was the first time he had played on the course. His card for the nine holes was as follows, scratch scores being given in parentheses:—2 (3), 3 (4), 4 (5), 3 (3), 2 (3), 3 (3), 3 (3), 4 (5)., 3 (4)-27 (33).
