BRIGHT AND VARIED ENTERTAINMENT

CONCERT GIVEN BY PUPILS OF MARIST SCHOOL

Bright and varied entertainment was enjoyed by a big crowd in the Victoria Hall last evening, when a. concert was presented by pupils of the Marist Brothers’ school, assisted by performers from the Hawaiian Studio. The items were of uniform excellence and, under the direction of Mr H. Matthews, the big programme was put through in a very expeditious manner. Evidence of sound training in music and elocution was shown by the Marist school pupils, and the audience expressed its appreciation of their efforts in no uncertain manner. Equal popularity was enjoyed by the adult performers and items by the “Hill Billies,” and the Hawaiian trio, in particular, won generous applause. Mr Matthews appeared in a number of items, showing considerable versatility as well as no small knowledge of the art of entertainment. The programme was as follows:—St. Mary’s boys’ mouth organ band; songs, Jim Stapleton, Pat Waldock, Brian Winters, Billy Burke; Irish jig, D. Hoffman; song, Billy Burke; mouth organ solo, Morrel McKenzie; pianoforte solo, R. Harrington; banjo solo, Harrison Craig; ventriloquism, Mr H. Matthews and his talking doll; banjomandolin and pianoforte numbers and accordion duet, Henry Alsweiler and Mrs Matthews; magician and juggler, Mr Matthews; “Dot and Boy,’' crosstalk, D. Dawson and S. Sapwell; “Fly Trap,” a sketch, R. Butler and G. McKenzie; “Wig-Maker,” a sketch, I. Sutherland, R. Turner, P. Stead and Miss D. Dawson; Hawaiian trio, members Hawaiian Studio; Hill Billy numbers, members of the Hawaiian Studio.
