Edwardian Styles
“Here To Stay” “JJAIR is on the up and up”! This seems to be the theme song of all smart hairdressers just now. This revival of Edwardian hair styles is here to stay and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Paris received .it enthusiastically, and the other fashion centres of the world are quickly following suit. So don’t wait until another new style is on the horizon' before you adopt it. So many New Zealanders do just that. My artistic sensibilities have been frequently wounded of late, by seeing so many of the charming new season’s hats worn at the wrong angle, and with a downward sweep of hair showing at the back. By comparison, they are nowhere in the soignee class, with the few who are wearing their hats atop correctly upswept locks. You may be one of > the many who imagines that higH-dressed hair is only suitable for evening wear and • that it is impossible to pose a hat smartly over a topknot - of curls. This is true only when the hair has not been cut arid trimmed correct!''.’. There is no advantage nowadays in having bulky masses of hair, and when it comes to piling it on top of the head, the result is neither artistic nor comfortable. But a very different effect may be achieved by having the hair cut in suitable lengths and thinned and i tapered where necessary. The finished • coiffure will then have a well-groomed appearance and be easily manageable, and the wearirig of smart hats will present no difficulties. If you ..re one of the young things who is clinging with devoted persistence to a pageboy bobbed or roll effect at back, and whose only concession to Dame Fashion is a cluster of curls, or, as the Americans say, “beau-catchers,” on top of the head, do try, for. a change, the fresh and piquant charm of a ‘Tittle girl ready for the bath” coiffure. Ideal for the hot weather and very effective wfth or without a hat. Sometimes, when the hair is hot long ‘ enough to sweep right to the top of the head, it may be caught fairly high at the back in a Psyche-like knob effect; or, if it is too short for that, it might be brushed up in a series of sculptured curls. Even when the hair at the naps is quite short, ~ hairdressers have • a knack of achieving the upswept looks Combs are coming into favour again—the type that was popular in Edwardian times, for keeping the back hair in place. They will be found a boon, for their long prongs hold the upswept strands of hair securely so that even if hairpins fail one, there is no need to worry. .. To keep the curls firm.and the short, unruly wisps tidy, a lacquer is used. There are two types, one a liquid which is sprayed on after the hair has been set and dried, and which is easily removed by brushing. The other is in paste form, and is used as a moulding agent when the hair is being set. Being soluble in water, it washes off readily when the hair is shampooed.
