CATALOGUE RETURNS FROM AUSTRALIA EASY MELBOURNE CUP VICTORY (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 23. The New Zealand owned and trained horse, Catalogue, who won the Melbourne Cup, returned from Australia ion the/ Westralia. The ship had hei usual complement of passengers, but none of them would begrudge the attention and admiration accorded the horse as he stepped from his box tt the wharf. He stood the voyage well and appeared in excellent condition. Catalogue was accompanied on th( trip by Mr A. W. McDonald, of Awapuni, who put him through the fina stages of his preparation for the Melbourne Cup. “It was a hard race on th' face of things, but actually it was th< easiest Catalogue ever ran,’ he said “They all said he wouldn’t stay, and said he would. That was just the difference. He did—that’s all. Australiar writers said he should never have won but although he got a bad start he wa: soon running second and went on t< the front seven furlongs from home anc stayed there. If Catalogue’s jockey, F Shean, had let him go away be coulc have won by almost any distance. “A fluke? Well nearly everyone sai< so,” concluded Mr McDonald, “but th'

[fact remains he won and won handsomely.” SWIMMING TONIGHT’S CARNIVAL Tonight the Ex-Pupils’ Swimming Club is holding its annual carnival. Excellent swimming is expected, there being no fewer than four championship events on the programme. The hardest race will probably be the 100 yards. In this event Bath, Millar, Johnson, Shaw, Berry and Springford will be meeting and it is confidently expected that P. McGrath’s record of 59 4-ssec will be broken. The 220 ’ yards intermediate boys’ championship, in which Alexander and Cameron are competing will be a good race and Alexander should be close to the present holder. There are record entries in the handicap events and good swimming should result. The water polo teams are:— Ex-Pupils.—W. T. and F. W. Springford, D. C. Berry, D. F. Davis, A. Duncan, A. Marshall, V. Grenfell. The Rest.—l. Mitchell, Grace (2), J. Cameron, M. Fearne, W. Johnson, J. Henry. WELCOME TO GOLF CHAMPION PAX SMITH RETURNS TO AUCKLAND (Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, November 23. In spite of the earliness of his arrival by the first express yesterday morning, Pax Smith, the 20-year-old Akarana golf player, who last week won the amateur championship of New Zealand at the Balmacewen links, was greeted by an enthusiastic gathering when he stepped from the Wellington train at the Auckland railway station If addition to members and officials of ♦he Akarana Golf Club, there was a large number of personal friends to welcome him. , . Smith flew from Christchurch to Palmerston North and caught the Wellington express there on Monday evening. The aeroplane in which he flew from Christchurch experienced a stormy passage, and when it was landing at Palmerston North a wing touched the ground and the machine was forced to rise again before finally settling on the aerodrome. The only luggage Smith had with him when he arrived was a large case containing the massive cup he won at the Dominion championships. Smith makes a very modest champion and there was no indication by his appearance yesterday morning of the stress and excitement he had undergone during the past week. Hs victory was very popular with all competitors m the tournament. A function in his honour will be given at the Akarana links next Wednesday evening, when representatives of various other golf clubs in Auckland will be invited to be present. CENTENARY FIXTURES NEXT YEAR New Zealand’s centenary golf championships will be held in 1939, not 1940, as was originally planned, according to a decision at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Golf Association. The open championship will probably be held at Miramar some time in November 1939. It is to be preceded by open tournaments at Auckland and

Christchurch, if Christchurch desires the event, and to be followed by the amateur championship at Miramar, Augmented prize money will be offered to attract overseas professionals of world class.
