REPUBLICANS RETURN TO SCENE
GAINS IN BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS NEW YORK, November 10. America’s political line-up has undergone a remarkable change after the elections, which brought the Republican Party definitely back into the picture. ' The almost complete returns show that the Republicans gained 78 seats in the House of Representatives, eight in the Senate, and 11 governorships. These results far exceeded expectations. The state of the parties in the next Congress, subject to changes when the doubtful contests are decided, will be: SENATE Democrats 67 Republicans 23 Farmer Labour 2 Progressive 1 * Independent Republicans 2 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Democrats 252 Republicans 167 Progressive 2
