ACCOMMODATION AT SHOW GROUNDS

- f MAJOR ALTERATIONS SUGGESTED The necessity for improving the ac- * commodation and appointments at the show grounds was mentioned by directors of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association at a meeting yesterday. “Sooner or later we will be faced with making extensive alterations to the show grounds and it is time we considered the position,” declared Mr A. : M. Weir. “The horse boxes at the north end will require to be shifted to open up that area, and to enlarge the ring the sheep pens on the east side also will need to be shifted.” Mr Weir advocated extending the ring out to the terrace on the east side. The addition of the new ground meant altering the whole lay-out and there was no reason why a good job should not be. made of it, he added. Members agreed that the situation . had to be faced and it was agreed to • refer it to the finance committee. i There were present at the meeting: Dr A. F. Ritchie Crawford (president) 1 and Messrs W. Falconer, W. R. Ronald, ! W. Kennedy, D. Marshall, G. Herron, J. ' Macdonald, W. Clark, A. M. Weir, D. Evans, S. Young, R. Swale, A. Campbell and G. F. Blakie. Messrs Weir, Falconer and A. L. Adamson (secretary), who acted as 1 delegates of the association at the Royal ] Show at Hamilton, reported on various , matters. All praised the standard of , administration at Hamilton and said : that several matters could be introduc- I ed with advantage to the Southland Royal Show. j Referring to the move to centralize j the Royal Show Mr Weir said that the , proposal had been emphatically re- ( jected by delegates who had travelled 1 long distances. They were emphatic ] that the Royal Show should “go • around.” He was satisfied that peripatetic shows were the best in the long run. Centralization was not in the interests of the greatest number who 1 wished to see a Royal Show. 1 The standard set at the Royal Show ( at Hamilton was something of which to ] be proud and there was no doubt that ] the Southland delegates learned many S things, he said. It would be necessary I to make improvements at the Invercar- ' gill show grounds before Southland ‘ could reach the standard set at Hamil- j ton. The ring would have to be made bigger and attractions for the people would have to be introduced. Mr Angus Campbell’s name was added to those appointed to the grounds j committee. ( The date of the ram fair (flock j Romneys) fixed for April 1, 1939, was 1 put forward to March 24. 1
